FAQs on Gynecology:

What Exams Does A Gynecologist Perform?

  • Pelvic Exam - Checks for cysts, abnormal discharge, etc.
  • Pap Smear - Checks for precancerous or cancerous cells
  • Breast Exam - Performed to check for lumps, discharge and other abnormalities
  • Urine Sample - Used to check for pregnancy, infection and kidney health

What Is Digital Mammography?

Performed on an outpatient basis, a mammogram is a radiological examination of the breast that can detect cancers so small that even the most experienced examiner cannot feel them.  It's the most reliable method of early detection of breast cancer.

澳门金沙手机官方官网's new 3D digital mammography (tomosynthesis) produces a clear, electronic image with extraordinary detail of the breast tissue. The images are recorded electronically rather than on film and viewed on a computer. It results in shorter examination times and improved patient comfort and convenience.

Who Should Get A Mammogram?

All women should have a mammogram regularly to ensure that nothing new develops.

The American Cancer Society offers the following guidelines to women who are symptom-free:

  • Women 20 and older should perform breast self-examinations every month
  • Women 20 to 39 should have a clinical breast examination every three years
  • Women 40 and over should have a screening mammogram every year, or more often for women at increased risk
  • Women with family histories of breast cancer should ask their doctors about more frequent or earlier mammograms

What Do Breast Lumps Feel Like?

The feel of a breast lump will depend on what caused it, where it is located, and the type of growth. Certain lumps can be completely painless and easily moved around, while others are painful, swollen, and immobile.

Fibroadenoma lumps, which tend to disappear on their own, feel:

  • Painless
  • Have a smooth and rounded shape
  • Are easily moveable

Breast lumps are most likely to be cancerous if they:

  • Do not cause pain
  • Feel hard
  • Have an uneven shape
  • Are immobile

What Do I Do If I Find A Lump?

Don’t panic. Most breast lumps are not cancerous. If you find a breast lump or swelling, dimpling of the skin of the breast, or nipple discharge during self examination, you should see your doctor right away. However, only your doctor can make the proper diagnosis. Don't put it off; it could save your life.

How Can I Prepare For My Mammogram?

Getting ready for your mammogram is simple. You only need to remember two things:

  • Do not wear any deodorant, lotion or powder. They can interfere with the quality of the image.
  • Wear a two-piece outfit as you only need to remove your top.
